India has begun the limited-overs West Indies tour emphatically, registering a thrilling victory in the first ODI on Friday at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. They won the match by three runs in the final over, defending 308 runs in the second innings. The match witnessed several dramatic movements, including some funny ones. Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer was seen doing a dance celebration in the game, after taking the catch of Shamarh Brooks.

The incident took place in the twenty-fourth over, when Shardul Thakur who was expensive till then, got India a much-needed break-through. He bowled a short wide of off-stump delivery, which Brooks mistimed to Shreyas Iyer at deep square. Shreyas completed and catch and celebrated by dancing in front of the crowd.

During a conversation with Mohammed Siraj in a video on BCCI.tv, Shreyas revealed the reason behind the celebration. He expressed that the crowd was teasing him to drop a catch. But when he took one catch he teased them back, by dancing like them.

“Tell us about those dance moves with the crowd. What was going on there?” asked Siraj. “They were teasing me, saying ‘Drop a catch, drop a catch’. So when a catching opportunity came, I danced like them (the West Indies players).

India goes one up in the three-match ODI series

Batting first, India put on 308 runs on the board on the back of solid performances from the top three. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan slammed 97 runs off 99 deliveries, while Shubman Gill scored 64 runs and Shreyas Iyer contributed 54. Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie took a couple of wickets each for West Indies.

In reply, Kyle Mayers smashed 75 runs, while Brandon King scored 54 runs. Shamarh Brooks too played a fine hand of 46 runs. However, the trio could not get West Indies over the line. For India, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each. Siraj defended 15 off the last over to power India to victory.

India will take on West Indies again in the second ODI match on Sunday, July 24 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. The visitors are leading the three-match ODI series 1-0.
