Team India opener Shubman Gill was dismissed in bizarre fashion in the second ODI against West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Sunday (July 24). Meanwhile, the tourists managed to seal the tie with two balls to spare and win the series 2-0 with one match still to go.
Chasing 312, Gill once again got India off to a flying start. He eased his way to 43, hitting five boundaries and looked in complete control of his knock. However, a cheeky ramp shot attempt off Kyle Mayers in the 16th over led to his strange dismissal.
Shubman Gill tried to scoop one over the wicketkeeper’s head, however, the ball wasn’t quite there for the stroke. The Punjab batter premeditated his scoop and as a result, was way too early into his shot.
In the end, the ball hit the bottom of the bat and lobbed back at the bowler, who accepted the catch gleefully. The Indian opener walked back to the pavilion with a sheepish smile on his face, knowing very well that he had given his wicket away.

This was the second instance in as many games when the 22-year-old had gifted his wicket to the opposition after getting a start and looking in sublime form. In the opening one-dayer, he scored 64 off 53. However, he was run out as he was caught napping at the non-striker’s end with a direct hit.
Speaking of the game, India were reduced to 79/3 in the 18th over with Shikhar Dhawan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill all back to the pavilion. But a 99-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson brought the visitors back in the contest before Axar Patel (64* off 35) took the Men in Blue home.
“Boys didn’t lose the self belief” – India captain Shikhar Dhawan
Stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan lauded the performance of the cricketers, saying that the players didn’t lose self belief despite being put under the pump several times in the game. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhawan said:
“It was a great team performance. Boys didn’t lose the self belief, that is amazing. Iyer, Sanju, Axar everyone was amazing, Even Avesh came out in his debut game and scored those 11 important runs. Thanks to IPL, they perform on a huge stage.”
The third and final game of the series is scheduled to take place on July 27 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
