The Australian side has already reached the semifinals of the tournament. A consistent top order made things easy for the kangaroos as they heavily lessened the burden on other players.
However, the side will not be able to get the services of Shaun Marsh, who was reported to be injured in the nets today. Marsh was hit by a delivery by Pat Cummins which did enough damage to his forearm. Now, he has been ruled out of the tournament due to a fracture.
Peter Handscomb has been named as the replacement for injured Marsh and is expected to join the side ahead of the clash against Proteas. Marsh wasn”t given a lot of chances in this World Cup as the side preferred Usman Khawaja over him. He played just two games, against Pakistan and Sri Lanka scoring just 26 runs.
Their star player Glenn Maxwell was also reported to have had an injury scare after being hit by a bouncer from Mitchell Starc. However, coach Justin Langer confirmed that it”s not serious.
“The scans have cleared Glenn of any serious damage and we”ll continue to monitor him over the coming days. We are hopeful he will be fit to perform for us on Saturday against South Africa. We have made the decision to call up Peter Handscomb to replace Shaun in our World Cup Squad of fifteen “, said Langer.
Handscomb proved his mettle in the middle order in the Indian series where Australia won 3-2 a few months ago. Given a chance, he will be looking forward to replicating the same and create an impact on the side.
Australia will play their final league game against Southafrica on Saturday. The result of this match will determine whether Australia will end up as the table toppers or not.
