The debate surrounding the non-striker’s run-out for backing up came to the fore again, as Australian pacer, Mitchell Starc warned Joss Buttler during the third and final T20I against England on Friday, October 14 at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. Buttler remained unbeaten at the end of the innings slamming 65 runs from 41 deliveries.
The incident took place during the first innings of the match, in the fifth over. Starc ran into bowl to Dawid Malan, but showed great match awareness, to spot Jos Buttler out of his crease. He completed the delivery and while returning, gave Jos Buttler a warning. The duo engaged in an interesting conversation, as Buttler denied leaving his crease.
“I am not Deepti, but I might do it. Doesn’t mean you can leave early,” Starc said.
Buttler replied, “I don’t think I did.”

For the unversed, Deepti Sharma ran out Charlie Dean at the non-striker’s end for backing early, during the third ODI against England last month. This resulted in a lot of uproar on social media, where the fans debated on whether the dismissal was in the spirit of the game. However, running out the batters at non-striker’s end by bowlers for backing up early, is a fair mode of dismissal under MCC Laws.
England wins the T20I series 2-0
The third and final T20I between England and Australia ended with no result as rain played spoilsport on Friday, October 14 at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. As a result, England clinched the three-match series 2-0.
Batting first, Australia scored 112/2 in 12 overs. Jos Buttler was the leading run-scorer, while Ben Stokes also played a brilliant cameo of 17 runs off 10 deliveries. The match was reduced to 12 overs due to frequent rain breaks, and as per D/Ls, Australia was given a target of 130 runs in 12 overs.
However, rain again interrupted play when Australia was 30/3 in 3.5 overs. The match could not restart and was abandoned, handing England a 2-0 series win.
