While cricket may not be the star of the show in Europe and the United States, it is still one of the most popular sports in the world. With over 2 billion fans around the globe, it is second only to football in terms of success. Of course, cricket is a hit in England, where it is considered a national sport. But, it is also huge in Asia, Australia, and Africa.

The game is particularly popular in India, where it is the nations favorite sport. Not only does it have a lot of fans, but there are many bettors as well, who visit betting sites India, placing match, prop, and future wagers on their favorite game. The love that India has for the sport is reflected in their noteworthy teams. In this article, we’d like to look at some of the best ones.

The National Cricket Team

The Men in Blue represent India on an international scale. Whether it be One Day International (ODI), Twenty20 International, or Test cricket, Team India is prepared to do the job. Their hard work has certainly paid off recently. Currently, India is ranked 1st in ODI and in Twenty20 International. Though Australia and South Africa have surpassed them in Test cricket, the Men in Blue still hold on to the bronze rank.

It isn’t just that Team India has impressive achievements in the rankings. It is also that they house some of the best players, have had incredibly memorable showdowns with rival teams, and perform admirably whenever they take the court. For many, this might not be a surprise at all. After all, India is currently the leader in cricket innovation and fandom. The sport is most popular in the Asian country, as well as the surrounding area. Indian fans are also on the forefront of developing new ways to enjoy the game, such as virtual cricket, which is a huge hit.

The Mumbai Indians

Just like in football, focusing solely on international games wouldn’t suffice. Sometimes, we need to turn our attention to national tournaments. That’s why we’re shining the spotlight on the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL is the world’s largest domestic cricket league, showcasing some of India’s top teams. Take the Mumbai Indians, for example. Not only have they been the go-to club for many of India’s finest players, but they also hold a shared record for the most IPL titles, boasting an impressive total of five.

One of the team’s greatest achievements came in 2011 when they played the Champions League Twenty20 tournament. They managed to climb their way to the finals, where they faced off against Challengers Bangalore and won by 31 runs, a spectacular performance indeed. Since then, they’ve had a pretty impressive career, winning five IPL titles, and becoming the first franchise to cross $100 million in brand value in the Indian Premier League. Certainly, they’ve earned the right to call themselves one of the best Indian teams.

Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might just be Mumbai’s biggest rivals, sharing the five titles record as of 2024. Many are looking forward to a confrontation in the next Indian Premier League, though there is no certainty that either will take home the prize. That being said, the Super Kings’ titles are much more recent than the Mumbai Indians’, with their latest being in 2023. But, the Indian Premier League is not the only tournament in which CSK shine.

They’ve also performed quite well in the Champions League Twenty20 competition, which they’ve won twice (with the most recent victory being in 2014). A lot of their achievements recently can be attributed to their coach, Stephen Fleming, who is one of the most recognized and beloved New Zealand cricket players. He was once the captain of the national team and a spectacular left-arm bowler.

Concluding Thoughts

India’s history with cricket is just as complicated as the passion that most of the country’s residents feel for it today. Though the sport may have been brought over from England, most Indians consider it their own at this point. Indeed, the Indian teams who rise to the top, and continuously outperform any other competitors prove that cricket is, in some ways, India’s sport.
