The recently concluded 2017 Women’s World Cup held in England from 24th June to 23rd July saw the most number of sixes hit than any other edition. It was a brilliant tournament with good batting pitches in 5 different venues. The batters exhibited their power hitting from 8 countries. India, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia, and Pakistan participated in the tournament.
Many matches were broadcasted on Television which made the audience saw the matches. A total of 111 sixes were hit in 31 matches. During the tournament, many great innings were played by Harmanpreet Kaur, Sophie Devine, Chamari Atapattu, Meg Lanning, Tammy Beaumont, Sarah Taylor. During these innings, lots of sixes were hit and entertained the crowd.
England won the title by 9 runs. In the finals too, Harmanpreet Kaur and Punam Raut played a great knock but could not help India to win the match. In this World Cup, the batters scored at a quick pace with the run rate of 4.69 runs per over. With that 70 scores of 50 which shows that Women’s Cricket batting has improved a lot.
The 2013 edition of the Women’s World Cup held in India saw a total of 67 sixes in 25 matches. The top scorer in that tournament was Suzie Bates with 407 runs. Television showed matches live but not frequently. During the tournament, the batters went at a run rate of 4.27 runs per over with 44 scores of 50.
In the 2009 edition held in Australia, a total of 47 sixes were hit in 25 matches. The top scorer in that tournament was Clarie Taylor with 324 runs. The batters went at a run rate of 3.62 runs per over which showed that women’s cricket was played at slow speed. A total of 43 scores were made during that tournament.
India finished 2nd in the 2005 edition. In that tournament, only 15 sixes were hit in 31 matches and the batters went at a run rate of 3.58 with 33 scores of 50.
2000 Women’s edition held in New Zealand of the World Cup saw only 8 sixes. A total of 31 matches were played. The batters went at a run rate of 3.45 runs per over and 33 scores of 50 were scored.
This Women’s World Cup was a success with India finishing runners up. It showed that the Women batters can hit big sixes like the men.
