Former India opener and commentator Aakash Chopra has revealed who should the KKR franchise retain ahead of the 2021 IPL auction. The Kolkata Knight Riders franchise have had a rough year with regards to their performance, they started off poorly then edged back to winning ways followed by which we noticed the shocking resignation as captain by Dinesh Karthik.

England’s world cup winning skipper Eoin Morgan then took over from Karthik but that didn’t really change the degrading fortunes of the franchise. After Morgan took over, KKR lost back to back matches then returned to winning ways and somehow posed an outside chance for themselves to qualify for the playoffs in the end stages of the tournament.

‘KKR  Should Retain Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy & Shubman Gill’ – Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra revealed that KKR should only look to retain three players and nothing more than that as then in the mega auctions they won’t be able to build a proper team with the limited money they would be having. Aakash’s first choice for Andre Russell since the man from the Caribbean is a T20 rockstar and they cannot afford to repurchase him in the auction if they think of releasing him as it will be costly for them.

“The first name is Andre Russell. This year may not have been good but he is a T20 rockstar. If you release him and try to buy him at the auction, he will be very expensive, so it is better to retain him. You also create a relationship with the player and tell him that he is an integral part of the team.”

Followed by which he picked Varun Chakravarthy as he’s been making quite a lot of news in recent times as his already caused a major impact in the recently concluded edition by picking up a lot of wickets. In the end, his third and final pick for Shubman Gill since he had a decent outing for the franchise opening the innings.

“The second player I can see is Varun Chakravarthy. He is taking wickets, he is a mystery bowler and is accurate, If he goes into the auction, he will be very expensive, everybody needs a mystery spinner and Varun Chakravarthy is that guy for you.”

“Last but not least, who could actually be their first retention. Name is Shubman Gill.” The KKR opener had a decent outing with 440 runs in 14 innings for KKR in IPL 2020.
