Cricket World in Awe as Abhishek Sharma's Stunning Century Against England in Fifth T20

Indian young batting star Abhishek Sharma found himself in an unexpected health crisis just as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 reached a crucial stage. Ahead of India’s group match against Namibia, Sharma was admitted to a private hospital in New Delhi because of a severe stomach infection, according to official sources and media reports.

The situation developed rapidly, with the left-handed opener falling ill even before India’s previous match against the USA, and his condition reportedly worsened after that game. As a result, he did not take part in the team’s training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and was seen receiving medical attention, including drips to manage dehydration and fever.

A source close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Sharma had spent the past two days under observation, with various tests underway to determine the full extent of the infection. “Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to stomach infection. Some tests are being done to ascertain the problem,” the source said. “It is still not clear whether he will be discharged today. But match against Namibia looks doubtful as of now.”

Match Impact and Team Adjustments

Sharma’s health setback has raised questions over India’s team composition for the upcoming T20 World Cup encounter scheduled on February 12. As a key top-order batsman, his presence in the lineup was expected to be significant during the group-stage games. His absence could lead India to reshuffle their batting order or bring in reinforcements to compensate for this sudden gap.

The player’s illness did not only keep him out of training; he also did not field at all during India’s match against the USA after being dismissed without scoring. That day, another fielder took his place in the fielding lineup throughout the USA innings.

With the team managing crucial preparation days before the Namibia fixture, coach staff have refused to completely rule Sharma out, holding onto cautious optimism. While medical updates are still awaited, the immediate priority for the Indian camp remains monitoring his recovery and finalising the squad that will take the field.

Coaches and Support Staff Reactions

In press interactions with the media, India’s coaching staff expressed both concern and hope regarding Sharma’s situation. One assistant coach said, “Abhi (Abhishek) still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he’ll be available for the game in two days’ time.”

This measured statement reflects the team’s optimistic yet uncertain outlook — acknowledging his ongoing discomfort while also holding out the possibility that he might recover in time for the Namibia clash. Fans and followers of the tournament will be watching closely for further updates as the match day approaches.
