In the second T20I against Ireland in Sharjah on Sunday, March 17, Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan delivered a remarkable performance, showcasing his prowess with both bat and ball. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Rashid, coming in at number 9, captivated the audience with a dynamic cameo, smashing 25 runs off a mere 12 deliveries.

The 25-year-old played an extraordinary shot on the last delivery of the 18th over, causing a sensation on social media. Pacer Barry McCarthy delivered a low full toss at the stumps, and Rashid effortlessly dispatched it for a six over the deep backward square leg boundary with a no-look stroke.

Rashid Khan’s dynamic innings propelled Afghanistan to a total of 152/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Additionally, he showcased his classic bowling prowess, claiming four wickets while giving away only 14 runs from his entire four-over spell. This stellar performance contributed to Afghanistan’s 10-run victory, leveling the three-match series 1-1.

Rashid Khan made his comeback to competitive cricket during the T20I series against Ireland

It’s notable that Rashid Khan resumed competitive cricket in the current series after being sidelined since the 2023 50-over World Cup. Following the tournament, the premier leg-spinner underwent back surgery to address a longstanding injury.

In an interview with the Afghanistan Cricket Board before his comeback series, Rashid shared the following remarks:

“The plan is to represent the country in the upcoming series and the training has been underway and today was the second day and thankfully it went well and I hope that the following few days will also be well so that I can wear the national jersey again and continue to do well for my country.”

“The last three months were difficult because I had surgery. I had been suffering from a back injury for the last seven to eight months and the doctor had asked me to have surgery even before the World Cup.”

“But I decided to play the World Cup and have surgery afterwards because it was such an important event for us but Alhamdulillah I am back on the field and feeling well now and now my focus is on returning to the field and bringing joy and success to the nation,” he added.

The crucial T20I series finale between Afghanistan and Ireland is scheduled to take place in Sharjah on Monday, March 18th.
