Ajinkya Rahane is on everyone’s mind after he captained India to a historic win at MCG. Now, Ian Chappell has revealed what makes Rahane tick as a captain. The former Australia captain is in awe of Rahane and believes he has all the qualities to become a successful leader.

Rahane was under extensive pressure as a captain in absence of Virat Kohli ahead of the MCG. However, Rahane once again raised his game after taking the captaincy reins and produced an iconic century at MCG. Chappell stated that Rahane is calm under pressure and stays unfazed when the game drifts away from his team.

“It was no surprise that Ajinkya Rahane captained India flawlessly at the MCG; anyone who saw him in charge in Dharamsala in 2017 would have recognized a man born to lead cricket teams”.

“That’s part of Rahane’s success as a skipper: he’s brave and smart. However, there’s much more to his leadership than just those two important qualities. He is calm when things could easily get out of hand. He has earned the respect of his team-mates, one of the most important aspects of good captaincy. And he gets runs when they are needed, which adds to the respect his team has for him”, Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNCricinfo.

Meanwhile, Rahane was spot on as a captain with his bowling and fielding changes in the field. He had a plan for every Aussie batsmen which reflected in the field placements. When his turn with the bat came he grinded it out and scored a memorable century that made him the man of the match. Now, Rahane will be aiming to continue his brilliant form in the next Test at Sydney that begins from January 7.
