As the 2025–26 Ashes tour unfolds, the England cricket team took a scheduled four-night pause in the Queensland coastal resort of Noosa. The getaway, planned well in advance, comes after two heavy defeats — leaving England trailing 2–0 in the five-Test series. Despite the losses, the break offered players a chance to decompress and regroup before heading to Adelaide for the third Test.
Unsurprisingly, their beachside downtime drew the attention of local media — some critical, others mocking. Headlines splashed dramatic takes: slogans such as “Sun’s out, run’s out,” “Life’s a beach even for sinking Poms,” and “Overprepared to the bitter end” accompanied photographs of players relaxing, grabbing drinks, and simply enjoying the sunshine.
Alex Carey’s Defence — A Reasonable Reset Amid Pressure
Alex Carey, Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter, spoke out in support of England’s decision for a break, urging caution against harsh judgment. He argued that in an intense contest like the Ashes, it’s unrealistic to expect players to stay mentally and emotionally “on” every single day. As Carey put it:
“The Ashes is very hotly contested, you don’t want to be thinking of cricket every single day of the tour. If you do have a little break it’s probably not a bad time to refresh the batteries.”
He further noted the long gaps between Test matches meant touring squads need to find ways “to take your mind off cricket for a little bit.” It’s not unprecedented, he said — “It’s totally up to the touring groups.”
A Warning and a Reality Check for Australia
While Carey defended England’s hiatus, he also sounded a cautionary note to his own side: a 2–0 lead doesn’t guarantee victory in a long series. He recalled how Australia — after a similar advantage — had faltered in the 2023 Ashes, emphasising that “complacency” would be dangerous now.
In other words: even as England steps away to recharge, Australia must remain vigilant. The series is far from decided. Carey’s comments reflect that the upcoming Test in Adelaide won’t be just about skill, but also about mindset — for both teams.
