Alex Carey Discusses How Virat Kohli And Steve Smith Influenced His Choice To Avoid a Reverse Sweep In The Ashes

In the WTC Final, Alex Carey, an Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, said that Steve Smith and Virat Kohli criticized his reverse-sweep shot. After receiving criticism from the greats, he thought about limiting the shot.

Carey used unconventional sweeps and reverse sweeps in the subcontinent earlier in the year to defend against the threat of spin.

But while attempting the reverse-sweep shot, the left-hander was ejected four times.

In the first innings of the WTC final, Australia attempted a reverse sweep off Ravindra Jadeja, but the South Australian player was caught in front of the stumps.

Carey fell short of his fifty, but he went on to score 66 runs in the second inning despite not taking the unconventional shot.

Carey played a disciplined innings, which included a sixth-wicket partnership of 118 runs with Usman Khawaja (141), a centurion.

In an interview with the news organization Australian Associated Press, Carey explained why he started avoiding the reverse sweep.

At The Oval, the first innings didn’t require that to be played. You probably pay attention to Virat Kohli and Steve Smith when they ask, “What are you doing that for?,” he said.

Moeen Ali and Alex Carey each receive one sweep shot.

During his focused innings, Alex Carey faced Moeen Ali of England with 34 balls. In response to Moeen’s bowling, the Australian gloveman hit four boundaries and a six, but his lone sweep shot only netted him two runs.

Carey mentioned: “When describing the rationale behind playing that shot after holding it for a while.”

“The opportunity I noticed after 50 yesterday was that (Ben) Duckett came into point and there was no one boundary-riding out there.”

“Even though I missed my chance to score, I probably saw other opportunities.”

In the second innings, England lead Australia by 222 runs.

After only 10.3 overs of the England innings were bowled on Day 3, the game had to be called off due to persistent rain in Birmingham.
