All eyes were glued to the TV sets once Mumbai named young all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar in their playing XI against Haryana in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Trophy. Although Mumbai’s losing run continued, Arjun made a small impression with his effort with the ball at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy.

In the wake of a poor start to the domestic T20 competition, Suryakumar Yadav included all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar in the playing XI. He has shown a lot of potential playing in age-group cricket and for India U-19 and rightly deserved a shot at the senior level.

Opting to bat first, Mumbai only managed to post 143 runs in the quota of 20 overs after a middle-order collapse. They were at 35 for no loss before being at 56 for six and in all sorts of trouble. Skipper Suryakumar, Siddhesh Lad, and India all-rounder Shivam Dube all returned for ducks leaving their side in deep waters.

But Sarfaraz Khan managed to hold one fort tight alongside Atharva Ankolekar to guide Mumbai to a decent total. Sarfaraz chipped in with 30 while Ankolekar played a 37-run innings to help the domestic giants post 143 runs at the half-way stage.

Mumbai had to strike early to keep themselves in the match and Arjun Tendulkar delivered the goods. Only in his second overs, Arjun removed CK Bishnoi after Mulani had removed Arun Chaprana in the 3rd over. The youngster hit the good length area as the batsman tried to heave the ball over the mid-wicket fielder and missed it completely.

The ball found the outside edge as Aditya Tare pounced on to a simple catch – his second of the day as Arjun Tendulkar looked in extreme joy.

Meanwhile, Arjun Tendulkar went for 34 runs in three overs that he bowled. Despite losing two early wickets, Haryana made a strong comeback and chased down 144 in 17.4 overs. With three wins from as many matches, they are sitting at the top spot in the points table.

Incidentally, Arjun Tendulkar was not in the initial 20-members squad but was added later on after BCCI increased the squad size from 20 to 22. With a couple of more matches under his belt, the 21-year-old will look to make a mark in senior-level cricket early in his career.
