Sri Lankan cricketers Ashen Bandara and Jeffrey Vandersay were involved in a horrific on-field collision during the third ODI against India on Sunday, January 15 at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. Medical personnel ran onto the field and both players were stretchered off after the collision.
The incident took place on the penultimate ball of the 43rd over in the Indian innings. Virat Kohli pulled Chamika Karunaratne for a boundary through the square leg region between Jeffrey Vandersay and Ashen Bandara. Both the players came to save the boundary but instead collided with each other. Bandara ran to his left and pulled out a dive. However, Vandersay who was running in from deep midwicket tumbled over Bandara.
Both the players were writhing in pain. The Sri Lankan physio came out on the field in a flash. Both Bandara and Vandersay were taken off the field on a stretcher. The incident left both the teams and the viewers concerned. Play resumed after some time, as Dunith Wellalage and Dhananjaya de Silva came in as substitute fielders.

Dunith Wellalage comes in as a concussion substitute for Jeffrey Vandersay
Dunith Wellalage came in as a concussion replacement for Jeffrey Vandersay. He was dismissed for three runs by Mohammed Shami. Meanwhile, Ashen Bandara did not come out to bat in the match. Earlier, both Jeffrey Vandersay and Ashen Bandara were taken to the hospital for scans. A decision on their participation was taken later.
Talking about the match, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 73 runs, with Nuwanidu Fernando as the leading run-scorer with 19 runs. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers for India with four wickets in ten overs, at an economy rate of 3.2. Team India whitewashed the hosts in the three-match ODI series, winning the match by a huge margin of 317 runs.
