Former Aussie skipper and arguably the best Test batsmen currently in world cricket, Steve Smith has been ruled out of the ongoing 2nd Ashes Test after getting hit by a fast delivery from Jofra Archer on Saturday. It resulted in a concussion and as a precautionary measure, Australia Cricket has decided to give him a break. Smith won’t be present during the final day of the 2nd Test against England.
Smith who is currently playing his first Test series after returning from the suspension has looked in immaculate touch in the series so far. He has already smashed a couple of centuries in the opening test followed by a 80 in this Test. He went off the field on 80 and returned to score 12 more. Moreover, Smith is a doubtful starter even for the 3rd Test.
Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne became the first-ever concussion substitute in the history of the game. As per new ICC regulations introduced for the ICC World Test Championship, a player can be substituted if he suffers a concussion. Unlike a fielding substitute, Labuschagne can also bat and bowl a few overs if required.

Smith scored a magical 144 in the 1st innings of the 1st Test and followed it up with a match-winning 142 in the 2nd innings as Australia came from behind and registered a sensational victory. During his knock of 92, Smith was struck twice by Jofra Archer. The latter eventually forced him to retire hurt on 80. Meanwhile, Aussie coach Justin Langer stated that it is hard to see Smith like that especially after looking in stupendous touch during the series so far.
“It’s hard to watch, he’s in good spirits tonight and he passed all the concussion protocol,” Australia coach Justin Langer stated at a press conference after Saturday’s play. It was a nervous time. He’ll have another test for concussion in the morning, thankfully his arm is OK as well. He is an incredible player and as long as he passes the guidelines I am sure he will be out there tomorrow.
