Ashes 2021-22: “Worse-Performing Team”-Ricky Ponting Slams England After Defeat In Melbourne

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has slammed the current England side as the worse-performing team down under. The tourists are trailing in the series 0-3 after losing the third Test in Melbourne. In the process, they have also lost a chance on retaining the Ashes urn.

Speaking to cricket.co..au, Ricky Ponting said that he hardly remembers a touring England side down under as bad as the current squad. He further said that England needs to look at dressing a few problems that is hindering them at playing at their best.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a worse-performing team in Australia than what I’ve seen over the last three games. We’ve been through this in Australia. You wind the clock back a few years ago when we had our struggles in England, we changed conditions, we changed the ball, we changed everything because we were poor in those conditions. England might need to have a look at how they can make their conditions more suitable to ours,” Ponting said.

England won their last Test series in Australia was back in 2011. They lost 5-0 and 4-0 in the previous two series. Root and co are likely to face another whitewash as things stand at the moment. The management and the skipper has failed to put together a squad that shows fight and grit to win Test matches on Australian soil.

Ponting concluded by criticising the technique of the current England batters against good quality pace attack.

“Some of the English top-order batters that I’ve seen in the last couple of tours, without giving names, there’s some techniques there that I just know are not going to stand up at Test level. In challenging conditions and world-class bowlers up against sub-standard techniques, then you get what happened today at the MCG. The little swing dibbly-dobblers that are getting them out over there, they’re not facing that at Test level,” Ponting said.
