Ashes 2023: For The First Test’s Second Inning, Ricky Ponting Predicts Big Numbers From David Warner

The WTC Final featured an out-of-form opener named David Warner, who, according to former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, appeared confident and will undoubtedly score a lot in the second innings.

Ricky Ponting predicts that David Warner, who appeared assured in the World Cup final, will score in the second inning.

Stuart Broad dismissed David Warner in the first innings of the first Test for just nine runs.

In the second innings of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has backed opener David Warner to perform with the bat against England.

Ricky Ponting believes David Warner will score a lot in the first Test’s second inning

Ponting thinks Warner looked good in the WTC final against India and the first innings of this Ashes Test, despite his recent poor Test cricket performance.

With his fifteenth dismissal of Warner in Test cricket, Stuart Broad cemented his position as Warner’s most frequently dismissed bowler.

Warner averages just 18 points per test against Broad, showing how unfair their rivalry has been.

The games played in England, where Broad has dismissed Warner nine times in 14 games, have been where his success against Warner has been most apparent.

Warner has struggled mightily during the Ashes games played on English soil. He has only averaged four runs against Broad.

Given his dismal Test average of 12.71 this year, Warner’s spot in the team is in jeopardy going into the second Test.

“He played really well in the 40 or so runs he made there, and I thought he looked really good in the first innings of the WTC Final.”

“Furthermore, despite the fact that he scored nine runs in the first innings here, the way he actually began his innings was the best I had ever seen him do in two years of Test cricket.”

“So it’s still there”, Ponting said in a statement following Day 3’s conclusion of play.

Usman Khawaja has been in outstanding form in whites over the past couple of years. While Warner’s inconsistent play has continued to worry Australia.

“I believe that the fact that he was unable to score as easily as he would’ve liked at the beginning of that inning contributed to him taking the shot that he did.”

“But there’s no denying that the second inning is crucial for him – not just for the sake of his career, but also for the outcome of this game and this series.”

“I think he will make some runs,” Ponting added.
