Former cricketer Ricky Ponting has weighed in on Australian David Warner’s dismal form in recent times in Test cricket. There has been a debate surrounding the left-handed batter’s place in the team. In the ongoing 2023 Ashes series, David Warner’s struggles against England pacer Stuart Broad have come to the fore.

Stuart Broad has dismissed David Warner 17 times in Test cricket. The latest dismissal was in the third Test of the 2023 Ashes at Headingley, Leeds. So far in the 2023 Ashes, he has scored 141 runs at an average of 23.50. Ahead of the fourth Ashes Test, Warner’s place in the Australian seems to be uncertain, given his poor form. Former cricketer Ricky Ponting acknowledged the chatter around the opener’s form. He said,

“I know there’s been a lot of chat the last couple of days since the end of Headingley and it’s more the fact that it’s Broad that’s getting him out, I think.”

“If it was anybody else, the noise probably wouldn’t be quite as loud. But the fact that he struggled to get through the opening spells of Broad a few times in this series again, makes it a little bit more of a worry,” he added.

I’d be inclined to stick with David Warner: Ricky Ponting

Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting further also spoke about David Warner’s trouble against Stuart Broad in Test cricket. He expressed that it is more of a mental battle than a technical battle between the duo. Despite Warner’s poor form, Ponting expressed that the team should stick with the left-hander for the 2023 Ashes series.

“I’ve played against teams in the past and bowlers in the past where you just know that they’ve got the wood on you and they’re on top of you and you just can’t get away from it,” he said.

“When someone’s got you out 17 times, it does become as much a mental or probably more of a mental battle than it does a technical battle. But just thinking about the series, I’d be inclined to stick with David Warner,” added Ponting.
