Veteran England pacer Stuart Broad opened up about the verbal spat with Australian players in the second Ashes Test at the Lord’s in London. He expressed that picking up a fight with the Australian cricketers was part of his strategy to divert the attention of the opposition players. England fought well but lost the match by 43 runs.

On the fifth day, Alex Carey’s stumping of Jonny Bairstow sparked a huge debate. Stuart Broad walked into bat after Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal. He exchanged a few words with the Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey. The pacer was caught saying on the stump mic,

“That is all you will ever be remembered for.”

He then walked up to the Australian skipper and said,

“Literally, that’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in cricket, that.”

I like to just get in a little bit of banter for myself: Stuart Broad

Talking about the incident, Stuart Broad expressed that he likes to get in banter on the field. He added that he wanted to pick up a fight with the Australian players during the Lord’s Test, to help skipper Ben Stokes. Broad said while speaking to Sky Sports on Tuesday,

“Sometimes I like to just get in a little bit of banter for myself. I knew I had such an important moment in that game at Lord’s. I need to make sure I was mentally switched on and able to do a job for Ben Stokes at the other end.”

“Part of my strategy really was to pick a fight with a couple of Australians. I wouldn’t be focusing on too much technique. I would be focusing on the ball and make sure I stayed there,” he added.

England has made a brilliant comeback in the ongoing 2023 Ashes series. They won the third Test by three wickets at the Headingley in Leeds. However, the hosts are still trailing 2-1 in the five-match Test series. The fourth Test will take place from July 19 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
