Ashes 2023: The Top Five Run Scorers For England At Lord’s

England and Australia are preparing for the second Ashes Test, which will take place at Lord’s from June 28 to July 2. Australia prevailed by two wickets in the final moments of Day 5 of the opening match between the two teams in Birmingham after an exciting contest.

When Ireland visited England for the lone Test earlier this month, England had already begun their summer there. With a first-inning scoring average of 309, Lord’s is known for having a high-scoring field.

The highest score England has ever amassed in an inning at the Home of Cricket is 653/4 (declared) against India in 1990.

There are 9 batters from the home team who have amassed more than 1,000 Test runs overall

Here are the five England batters who scored the most runs at Lord’s:

5) Alec Stewart (1,476)

Alec Stewart, a superb athlete, struggled to help Michael Atherton push England in the 1990s. With 8,463 runs in 133 Test matches and an average of 39.54, the Surrey player completed his career.

After Graham Gooch (8,900 runs), he was England’s second-highest run scorer when he retired from Test cricket in 2003. He was also the most-capped Test player in England at the time.

Between 1990 and 2003, the wicketkeeper-batter participated in 33 Test matches against Australia and amassed 1,810 runs at 30.67.

Stewart’s performance at Lord’s was exceptional. He scored 1,476 runs at 44.73 with the help of three centuries.

4) Andrew Strauss (1,562)

The unique aspect of Andrew Strauss’ Test career is that, from 2004 to 2012, it began and ended at Lord’s.

In May 2004 at the storied cricket stadium, Strauss played his first Test match against New Zealand.

He came back with scores of 112 and 83 in his first Test, which England won by seven wickets after chasing down 282.

In the 2009 Ashes Test here against Australia, he scored 161 runs, which helped England win by a margin of 115 runs to take the series 1-0.

(3) Joe Root (1,680)

The former Test captain of England is currently third on the list of English batters who have scored the most runs at Lord’s.

With six fifty-pluses and five centuries to his credit, he has amassed 1,680 runs in 35 Test innings at an impressive average of 52 points.

In his first game at Lord’s in May 2013 against New Zealand, Root scored 40 and 71 points.

Two months later, Alastair Cook’s team easily defeated Australia by 347 runs as he slammed a fantastic 180 against them in the second innings.

Root’s first double-century (200*) was achieved against Sri Lanka in his subsequent Test at Lord’s in 2014.

In the upcoming second Ashes Test, the 32-year-old hopes to become a member of the Honours Board for the sixth time.

2) Alastair Cook (2,937)

The English pace bowling combination of James Anderson (27) and Stuart Broad (27) recently surpassed Sir Alastair Cook’s (26) record for the most Test appearances at Lord’s. In those 26 Tests between 2006 and 2018, the former England captain scored 1,937 runs at a 43.04 average.

The left-handed batter scored 105 runs against Pakistan in his second Test at Lord’s. He contributed to a 233-run partnership with Paul Collingwood (186*) for the fourth wicket.

The England opener made 106 against Sri Lanka in 2011. His 14 innings and 14 more innings later, to score his third Test hundred at Lord’s.

1) Graham Gooch (2,015)

In competitive cricket, Graham Gooch was a prolific run-scorer. At 49.01, he scored 44,846 runs in first-class cricket. In 118 Test matches, 8,900 of them were scored for the England national team. Until Alastair Cook overtook him in 2015, he retired as England’s all-time leading Test scorer.

Between 1975 and 1994, Gooch scored 2,015 runs in 21 Tests at Lord’s. The most by any batter in the game’s oldest format, his six three-figure scores at cricket’s birthplace.

Gooch was outstanding during his brilliant 333-run innings against India in 1990. He helped England thrash the guests by 247 runs. After Len Hutton (364) and Wally Hammond (336*), that strike remains England’s third-highest individual score in Tests.
