During the second Ashes Test of 2023 at Lord’s, Australian opener David Warner showcased his batting prowess on Day 1 (Wednesday, June 28).
Despite the early loss of Usman Khawaja, Warner played a composed innings, reaching an impressive half-century with 66 runs on the board.Â
However, England’s debutant fast bowler, Josh Tongue, put an end to Warner’s impressive knock with an exceptional delivery in the 30th over of the Australian innings.
Warner, attempting to drive a full ball, was left bamboozled as the delivery swung back sharply, finding the gap between his bat and pad and crashing into the stumps.

It is worth noting that Josh Tongue had already made an impact earlier in the day, taking the crucial wicket of Usman Khawaja for 17 runs.
Tongue was included in England’s playing XI as a replacement for the all-rounder Moeen Ali
David Warner’s batting form had been under scrutiny leading up to the second Ashes Test. In the previous Test at Edgbaston, he struggled to make a significant impact, scoring just nine and 36.
Although Warner had a promising start in the World Test Championship (WTC 2023) final against India, with a score of 43 in the first innings, he could only contribute one run in the second innings.
Warner’s half-century at Lord’s will undoubtedly boost his confidence.
The Australian team relies on his explosive batting to provide a strong start, and his form will be pivotal for the team’s success in the Ashes series, with Pat Cummins leading the side.
After their thrilling two-wicket victory in the first Test, successfully chasing down a challenging target of 281 runs, Australia currently holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
The performance of players like Warner and the skillful bowling of Josh Tongue will be key factors in determining the outcome of the remaining matches and the fate of the Ashes trophy.
