Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian and IPL star, found himself at the center of an unexpected social media discussion during the IPL 2026 auction. Although Ashwin has retired from both international cricket and the Indian Premier League, he continues to follow and comment on the sport closely.
On December 16, the day of the IPL mini-auction, Ashwin used his social media platforms to share his thoughts on potential auction outcomes, particularly focusing on which players Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might target. Surprisingly, Ashwin’s predictions about CSK’s interest in uncapped players Prashant Veer and Karthik Sharma were accurate, as the franchise went on to secure both players shortly after his post — a fact that quickly drew attention online.
However, not all the response was supportive. One fan went as far as to accuse Ashwin of “leaking” CSK’s auction intentions, suggesting that his public predictions may have tipped off rival teams and influenced their bidding decisions.
This criticism stemmed from screenshots of Ashwin’s posts that circulated minutes before the official results were confirmed, leading some followers to question whether his commentary inadvertently affected strategic plans on auction day.
Ashwin’s Humorous Rebuttal
Rather than respond with irritation, Ashwin chose to deflect the criticism with humour and wit. In his reply to the fan’s accusation, he playfully reminded everyone that CSK’s auction strategy involved a much larger support system than just his tweets. On social media, Ashwin wrote:
“The Orange Army had Muralitharan, Vettori, Analysts and scouts sitting at the table and yet showed faith in my tweets.”
By referencing CSK’s well-respected cricketing minds — including legendary bowlers like Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Vettori, alongside professional analysts and scouts — Ashwin poked fun at the idea that his light-hearted analysis could meaningfully disrupt the plans of one of the IPL’s most successful franchises. This response not only defused the criticism but also highlighted Ashwin’s confidence in the broader analytical strength behind auction decisions.
Auction Results and Player Bids
The auction itself saw CSK go all out to secure both of the players Ashwin mentioned. Prashant Veer and Karthik Sharma emerged as joint-highest priced uncapped Indian players, each fetching ₹14.20 crore from CSK in competitive bidding.
Veer’s performances in domestic T20 cricket, especially in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, had already attracted significant attention, while Sharma’s record in both T20 and Ranji Trophy matches spotlighted his potential as a dynamic young talent. Despite interest from several teams — including SunRisers Hyderabad — CSK’s persistence saw them win the bidding wars for both players.
Overall, what began as simple auction analysis by Ashwin quickly became one of the more talked-about moments on IPL auction day — blending accurate prediction, fan reaction, and a light-hearted rebuttal from one of cricket’s most thoughtful commentators.
