The 2023 Asia Cup was a brilliant tournament marred by rain in Kandy, Palleke, and Colombo while the matches in Multan and Lahore went smoothly as there was interruption due to weather.

The matches held in Lahore saw high-scoring matches and great individual performances. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified for the Super 4 stage while India and Pakistan made it into the next round as they defeated debutant Nepal.

There were some brilliant batting performances in Asia Cup 2023 that stood out keeping the crowds entertained on tough pitches to bat in Colombo.

  1. Shubman Gill – 121

Shubman Gill proved his worth with a superb 121 in the final Super 4 match against Bangladesh. Chasing 266 runs to win, India lost 2 early wickets of Rohit Sharma and debutant Tilak Varma.

Gill looked in great touch putting pressure on Bangladeshi bowlers taking singles and hitting boundaries. He completed his half-century off 61 balls. With wickets falling on the other end, Gill showed his class with some lovely shots keeping India’s hope alive.

He reached his century off 117 deliveries and made the batting look easy. It was a superb batting effort by Gill as he could not take India to the winning line dismissed for 121 off 133 deliveries with 8 fours and 5 sixes. India lost the match by six runs.

  1. Kusal Mendis – 91

Kusal Mendis proved his worth with match-winning effort scoring 91 runs against Pakistan in a do-or-die encounter during rain curtailed reduced to 42 overs a side. Chasing 252 runs to win, Kusal Mendis came to the crease and looked in decent touch keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Pathum Nissanka.

After the fall of Nissanka’s wicket, Mendis kept the scoreboard along with Sadeera Samawickrama and kept the scoreboard ticking. He reached fifty off just 47 deliveries and made the batting look easy.

Mendis kept the momentum with singles and hitting boundaries at will. He was eventually dismissed by a brilliant catch by Mohammad Haris for 91 off 87 deliveries with 8 fours and 1 six. For his 91 off 87 deliveries, Kusal Mendis was named the player of the match. During the tournament, Kusal Mendis scored an important 92 against Afghanistan at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

  1. Sadeera Samarawickrama – 93

Sadeera Samarawickrama showed his abilities with a match-winning knock in the Super 4 match against Bangladesh. He came at the crease as Sri Lanka lost their 2nd wicket at 108.

He looked cautious against Bangladesh bowling as Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals. He rotated the strike and did not allow the bowlers to settle reaching fifty off 45 deliveries.

He then upped the ante with some lovely shots in the death overs and was dismissed off the last delivery. Sadeera scored 93 off 72 deliveries with 8 fours and 2 sixes that helped Sri Lanka post 257 for 9 in 50 overs.

For his match-winning knock, he was named the player of the match award.
