Bangladesh announced a strong squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 starting from 30th August to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Shakib AL Hasan has been appointed as the captain due to Tamim Iqbal withdrawing from injury.
They have named debutants Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Shamim Hossain Patwary. Both were a part of the winning team that won the Under 19 World Cup in 2020. Tamim was a part of the team that played in the recently concluded Emerging Asia Cup.
Mohammad Naim also makes a comeback into the national squad after a long time and is another opening option that Bangladesh might consider ahead of the Asia Cup 2023. Liton Das, Tanzid, Najmul Hasan Shanto, and Mohammad Naim are the four opening options. Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, and Nasum Ahmed make a comeback into the squad.
The spin bowling options look strong with the likes of Shakib AL Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Nasum Ahmed. Shoriful Islam, Musfiztur Rahman, Ebadot Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, and Hasan Mahmud are the pace bowling options that Bangladesh has for the prestigious event.
Shakib AL Hasan would hope to lead Bangladesh for glory in the 50-over Asia Cup 2023. It promises to be an exciting tournament as the Bangla Tigers failed to qualify for the Super 4 stage of the 2022 20-over Asia Cup played in the United Arab Emirates.
Bangladesh has been clubbed with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the group of death. They will begin their tournament against Sri Lanka at Palleke International Stadium, Kandy on 31st August. After that, Bangladesh will travel to Lahore for their 2nd match of the group stage against Afghanistan to be played on 3rd September 2023.
Bangladesh reached the 50-over Asia Cup finals in the 2018 edition where they narrowly lost to India. Shakib AL Hasan and Co would be hoping for a better performance against two top-quality sides including Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
