Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma’s Historic Six Against Shaheen Afridi Grabs Eyeballs

In the 2023 Asia Cup’s Super 4 clash between India and Pakistan, the Indian cricket team made an impressive beginning on Sunday, September 10th. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, India’s opening batsmen, displayed their prowess by dismantling Pakistan’s formidable pace attack, allowing India to accumulate an impressive 61 runs in the initial ten overs without losing a single wicket.

The situation demanded that India bat first at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. In the very first over, Rohit Sharma faced off against the left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi. Initially cautious, Rohit concluded the over with a spectacular six off Shaheen, initiating both his personal tally and India’s run-scoring in a grand manner.

Rohit’s six against Shaheen marked a historic feat for the Indian captain. He became the first cricketer ever to hit a six off Shaheen’s bowling in the bowler’s opening over during One Day Internationals (ODIs). This achievement is particularly remarkable as Shaheen had bowled the first over on 26 occasions in 41 innings and had never conceded a six until today’s match.

Rohit continued to exhibit confidence in his aggressive approach, accumulating three fours and one additional six in the first ten overs. Notably, he refrained from taking singles during the powerplay overs, demonstrating remarkable mastery in executing aerial shots.

Shubman Gill also made a significant impact during the powerplay, hammering Shaheen for six boundaries in two successive overs. India’s explosive start piled the early pressure on the Pakistani skipper, Babar Azam, who was compelled to introduce the pace all-rounder Faheem Ashraf into the game after just six overs of play.

The Indian cricket team’s splendid start against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 encounter showcased their dominance, with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill setting the tone with aggressive and history-making batting displays, ultimately putting pressure on the opposition’s captain to make tactical adjustments.
