Sri Lanka

The Indian Cricket Team registered a thumping 41-run victory over host Sri Lanka in low low-scoring match played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 12th September 2023. Sri Lankan Under 19 captain Dunith Wellage produced a brilliant performance with the ball picking his maiden 5-wicket haul in ODIs.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit Sharma looked in fine touch right from the word go putting pressure on Lankan bowlers with an attacking mindset. At the end of the first 10 overs, both openers raced away to 65 for 0. Rohit looked in sensational touch hitting boundaries at will. During this inning, the Indian captain scored 10,000 runs in One-day international cricket.

Dunith Wellage was introduced into the attack and got rid of Shubman Gill with a beauty-ending 80-run partnership for the opening wicket. He then dismissed Virat Kohli and well-set Rohit Sharma in his first three overs to put pressure on Indian batting. KL Rahul looked in decent touch along with Ishan Kishan keeping the scoreboard ticking on a tough batting wicket. Wellage struck once again with a simple return catch to him ending 63 runs partnership for the 5th wicket.

He then eventually got the wicket of Hardik Pandya via review for caught behind. The umpire gave it not out but on review it was overturned to out. It was a remarkable spell as he ended with figures of 5 for 40 in 10 overs.

Dunith Wellage Became the Fourth Sri Lankan Spinner To Pick 5 five-wicket haul Against India in ODIs.

Dunith Wellage became the fourth Sri Lankan to pick 5 5-wicket haul against India in ODI format. Sri Lankan legend has the best figures with 7 for 30 at Sharjah in 2000.

The mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis also holds the record of picking 6 for 13 in 8 overs during the 2008 Asia Cup finals. Akila Danajaya registered figures of 6 for 54 against India during a losing cause at Palleke International Stadium in 2017.

Dunith Wellage became the youngest Sri Lankan to pick 5 5-wicket haul in the ODI format against India. Despite his all-round efforts, the host Sri Lanka lost the match by 41 runs as Wellage remained not out on 42.
