Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has firmly denied a viral claim that he had criticized India over the recent handshake controversy during the Asia Cup 2025. A fabricated statement circulated widely on social media alleged that Ponting, while speaking on Sky Sports, called India the “big loser” for refusing to shake hands with Pakistan after their match.

The false comment read: “This match will be remembered forever with India as the big loser. The way the Pakistani team wanted to shake hands at the end has immortalised them as champions of the gentleman’s game with India as the perpetual loser.”

Ponting quickly dismissed these reports, stating that he had not spoken publicly about the tournament at all. On X (formerly Twitter), he clarified: “I am aware of certain comments being attributed to me on social media. Please know that I categorically did not make those statements and indeed have made no public comment about the Asia Cup at all.”

His response aimed to put an end to the misinformation that had been gaining traction online.

Handshake Row Sparks Debate

The controversy began after India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in Dubai. At the conclusion of the game, Indian players walked directly back into the dressing room without shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts. This unusual decision sparked heated discussions, with several critics questioning the spirit of the game. However, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav defended the move, clarifying that the players were following directives from the Indian government.

The lack of post-match handshakes was seen as more than just a cricketing issue, quickly turning into a matter of political and sporting tension. The incident highlighted how deeply off-field factors can influence sporting traditions and decorum in high-profile contests.

PCB’s Reaction and ICC Complaint

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by chairman Mohsin Naqvi, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the episode. According to reports, the PCB lodged a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), demanding action over India’s conduct. The board even called for the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft, accusing him of failing to address the situation properly.

This chain of events has magnified the intensity of the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry, where every gesture is magnified under global scrutiny. With Ponting’s clarification, attention has now shifted back to how governing bodies and players will handle the aftermath. The incident demonstrates how quickly misinformation can spread and how sports figures like Ponting must intervene to correct the record.
