Australia began their ICC T20 World Cup campaign with a 39-run win over Oman at Kennington Oval, Barbados on 6th June 2024. Defending 165 runs to win, Mitchell Starc produced a sensational yorker to dismiss Pratik Athavale.

Australian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals not allowing Oman batters to score runs easily. Ayaan Khan was the top scorer with 36 while Mehran made 27 in quick time. Mitchell Starc went off-field due to cramps and should be fit for the next match against arch-rivals England on 8th June.

It was a comprehensive win by Australia as they restricted Oman to 125 for 9 in 20 overs. Mitchell Starc took 2 for 20 in 3 overs, Nathan Ellis 2 for 28, and Zampa 2 for 24. Marcus Stoinis was the pick of bowlers with 3 for 19 in 3 overs.

David Warner surpasses Aaron Finch to become leading run-getter for Australia in T20Is

The pocket dynamo David Warner became the leading run-getter for Australia in the shortest format. Oman captain Aaqib Ilyas won the toss and decided to field first. Warner struggled against disciplined Oman bowling. Australia lost an early wicket of Travis Head. Mitchell Marsh and Warner steadied the ship putting on 31 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Aqib Ilyas took a stunning catch to dismiss Glenn Maxwell without opening his account. Warner kept the scoreboard ticking against disciplined Oman bowling. He then showed his class with some lovely strokes to keep Australia’s score ticking. Warner eventually completed fifty off 46 balls. It was a superb knock that held the innings together.

Warner was caught at long-off by Shoaib Khan for 56 off 51 deliveries with 6 boundaries and 1 six. Marcus Stoinis played a blinder scoring 67 off 36 balls that helped Australia post 164 for 5 in 20 overs.

Warner made his T20I debut against South Africa in 2009. He now became the leading run scorer in the shortest format with 3155 runs from 107 matches (107 innings) including 1 century and 27 half-centuries to his name. Warner would be looking to make major impact for Australia while opening the innings and help them win their 2nd ICC T20 World Cup title.

Aaron made 3120 runs from 103 matches (103 innings) including 2 centuries and 19 half-centuries to his name. He made his T20I debut for Australia in 2011.
