Steve Smith had an average outing in the 2-match Test series against West Indies at home that finished on 28th January 2024 with a stunning victory by the visitors after a gap of 27 years on Australian soil. Smith batted at number 4 during the Test series against Pakistan. He did not perform according to expectations with the best score of 50 during the first innings of the second Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG against Pakistan.

He opened the innings for the first time as an opener during the first innings of the first Test against West Indies at Adelaide Oval. Chasing down 216 runs to win, Smith looked impressive with his shots putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Australia lost 2 quick wickets of Khawaja and Labuschagne on 3rd night as Smith looked composed along with Cameron Green.

Starting the 4th morning on 33 not out, Smith looked in decent touch along with Green. Shamar Jospeh created havoc getting wickets of Green, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins in his 10 overs long spell. Smith completed fifty off 92 balls and kept the hopes of Australia alive. After the dinner break, Nathan Lyon was dismissed by Alazzari Joseph. Smith took the attack to West Indies bowlers and took a single off the fourth delivery.

Shamar Joseph bowled a stunning delivery to the castle the stumps of Josh Hazlewood as West Indies registered a 7-run victory leveling the series at 1-1. Smith remained not out on 91 with 9 boundaries and 1 six.
