Australia captain Pat Cummins played a significant role in the initial session of the home series against West Indies, securing two wickets. He crucially dismissed opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite, who was clean bowled for 13 runs off 45 deliveries on Day 1 at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday, January 17.

Cummins, leading the side, chose to field first, and the reigning World Test Champions took control from the start. A notable catch by Cameron Green at gully dismissed Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the tenth over, setting the tone for the hosts.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Kirk McKenzie faced a challenging encounter against the new ball pace trio. However, in the 14th over, Brathwaite succumbed to Cummins’ delivery, as it targeted the off stump line.

Brathwaite played inside the line, allowing the ball to pass and hit the top of the stump, leading to his dismissal.

West Indies are at 64-3 after Pat Cummins’ double breakthrough in the opening session against Australia on Day 1

Under the leadership of Kraigg Brathwaite, the team made an effort to reconstruct their innings with young players Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze at the crease. While the duo resisted the bowlers for a while, Josh Hazlewood eventually dismissed Athanaze in the closing moments of the session.

Although the pair resisted the bowlers for a while, Athanaze was eventually dismissed by Josh Hazlewood towards the end of the session. After the first session, West Indies stood at 64-3, with Kirk McKenzie and debutant Kavem Hodge at the crease.

In their previous visit to Adelaide Oval in late 2022, the Men in Maroon suffered a 419-run loss. They aim to avoid a repeat and need to post a substantial total in the first innings.
