Delhi Capitals are set to appoint Axar Patel as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, sources told IANS. The franchise had considered KL Rahul for the leadership role, but he declined, choosing to focus solely on his batting. While an official confirmation is still pending, the announcement is expected soon.
“Axar Patel is likely to be named Delhi Capitals skipper for IPL 2025. The franchise had asked KL Rahul to lead the team, but he wishes to contribute as a player in the upcoming tournament,” a source revealed.
Axar Patel’s Experience and Leadership Potential
Although Axar Patel has never captained an IPL team, he has been an integral part of Delhi Capitals for the past seven seasons. His consistent performances as an all-rounder make him a strong candidate for the leadership role. Over 150 IPL matches, he has accumulated 1,653 runs at a strike rate of nearly 131 and taken 123 wickets at an economy rate of 7.28. His familiarity with the team and understanding of the game position him well to take on the captaincy challenge.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul was Delhi Capitals’ most expensive signing at the IPL 2025 mega auction, costing ₹14 crore. Having previously led Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), he guided LSG to two playoff appearances. With 4,683 runs in 132 IPL matches at a strike rate of 134, including four centuries, Rahul remains a dependable performer. However, concerns about his strike rate during power plays may have influenced his decision to step away from leadership responsibilities.
Delhi Capitals’ Preparations and Upcoming Matches
Ahead of the tournament, Delhi Capitals have arranged a short training and simulation camp in Delhi before traveling to Visakhapatnam, where they will play their opening matches. Key players such as Rahul, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav will participate, alongside overseas recruits Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Mitchell Starc.
Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24 at the ACA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Their second fixture will be against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the same venue on March 30. With Axar Patel likely to lead the side, all eyes will be on how Delhi Capitals perform under new leadership in the highly competitive tournament.
