Axar Patel made a mockery of Johnny Bairstow’s technique on day 2 of the day and night Test match at Ahmedabad. The India left-arm spinner almost got a hattrick but Bairstow survived after he took a DRS. The very next ball Axar Patel castled him with a brilliant arm ball and sent him to the pavilion for a duck. The England number 3 batsman played for the turn but unfortunately, the ball went straight on and snuck between the bat and pad.
The pitch is turning a mile of day 2 itself and Axar Patel is exploiting the conditions brilliantly. After India was bundled out for 145 in their first innings India needed quick wickets and the captain Virat Kohli handed the new ball to his spinner. Axar who picked a five-wicket haul in the first innings was amongst the wickets straight away in the second.
He dismissed Zack Crawley on the very first ball of the England innings. Once again an England batsman made the mistake of playing for the turn but the ball held the line and clean bowled Crawley for a golden duck. In came Bairstow who attempted an audacious sweep shot on his first ball which he failed to execute and the ball hit his back leg. The Indian team appealed for an LBW and the umpired also raised his finger but the decision was overturned as the ball was missing after England took a DRS.
The decision didn’t make a difference as Axar removed Bairstow on their first next ball much to the delight of his teammates and the crowd at Ahmedabad. The Indian captain Virat Kohli led the celebrations as he jumped and gave a send-off to Bairstow and the crowd at the stadium erupted. England is currently 46 for 3 with Joe Root and Ben Stokes are stitching an important partnership in the context of the third Test match.
