Axar Patel’s Role In Middle Order Proves Important For India
Axar Patel Misses 5 Records After Rohit Sharma Dropped Catch

Axar Patel has played a crucial role in adding flexibility to India’s middle order, earning praise for his contribution. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar supports the team’s decision to maintain a left-right batting combination in the middle, which led to Axar being promoted to No.5 ahead of KL Rahul.

This strategy was first implemented during the ODI series against England and continued in the Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh in Dubai. Although Axar managed only eight runs in that game, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill guided India to victory with six wickets in hand and 21 balls remaining.

Manjrekar emphasized that having a left-hander like Axar Patel in the middle order prevents India from facing the same challenges they encountered in the 2023 World Cup, where Ravindra Jadeja was the only left-hander in the lineup. He believes that KL Rahul must be adaptable and prepared to bat at any position in the middle order, as the role demands flexibility. Manjrekar noted that Axar’s presence in the batting order helps counter spin attacks more effectively, making the lineup more balanced.

Balancing the Batting Lineup with a Left-Right Combination

Manjrekar, speaking as a JioHotstar expert, shared his thoughts on the Indian batting order. He expressed concerns about the dominance of right-handed batters and highlighted the importance of a left-right combination. He praised the decision to push Axar Patel up the order, calling it a well-thought-out strategy that prevents India from relying too much on right-handers. He also pointed out that KL Rahul will need to adjust to his new position at No.6, a crucial role that requires stability and the ability to finish games.

This tactic is particularly useful when facing left-arm spinners or leg spinners whose main delivery turns away from right-handers. By having Axar at No.5, India ensures better adaptability to different bowling attacks. Manjrekar acknowledged that while Axar has yet to deliver a significant batting performance, his presence in the middle order strengthens the team’s overall strategy.

Rishabh Pant’s Absence Raises Questions

Another point of discussion has been the omission of Rishabh Pant from the playing XI. Manjrekar remarked that it is surprising to see a talent like Pant on the bench, underscoring the depth and quality of the Indian squad.

KL Rahul continues to be the team’s preferred wicketkeeper-batsman, and his solid 41-run innings against Bangladesh further cemented his position. While Pant’s return to the lineup remains uncertain, the decision to keep him out highlights the strong competition for spots in the Indian team.
