The 2011 World Cup win remains one of the most celebrated moments in Indian cricketing history. While everyone made telling contributions throughout the tournament, the victory is often credited to captain MS Dhoni. Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who was part of the squad, is the latest to question it.
In the summit clash against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, India beat Sri Lanka, skipper MS Dhoni played an unbeaten knock of 91 which included an iconic six on the last ball to seal the victory. The cricket fraternity has time and again credited Dhoni for inspiring India to win the coveted title.
Harbhajan Singh was not pleased with the same and asked what about the other 10 players, He categorically named Gautam Gambhir, who scored 97 in the final. He further compared it to Australia’s multiple World Cup wins where he believes the praise is shared between the entire team.
“When Australia wins the World Cup at that time everyone says ‘Australia won the World Cup’. When India wins the World Cup at that time, everyone said, ‘MS Dhoni won the World Cup. Toh baaki ke 10 waha lassi peene gaye the?,” said Harbhajan while speaking on Star Sports.
“What did the other 10 players do? What did Gautam Gambhir do and what did the others do? It’s a team game. When 7-8 players play well only then only your team will progress,” Harbhajan Singh added.
