As cricket fans around the world eagerlyawait the marquee T20 World Cup 2026 clash between India and Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Pakistan captain Babar Azam offered his thoughts on how players – especially youngsters – can cope with the intense pressure that accompanies this iconic rivalry. Known for delivering under pressure, Babar explained that learning to remain calm is crucial when the stakes are high.
He highlighted the importance of shutting out external noise and hype leading up to such a fixture. In his message, he said, “We have played quite a few such matches, and we’ve learned that the calmer and more relaxed you keep yourself, the less you listen to outside noise, the better it is.”
Babar emphasized that this internal calm allows players to stay composed and focused on executing their skills when it matters most. “If you stay straightforward and focused, that helps a lot,” he added, underscoring that a clear mindset often translates into better performance on the field.
Passing Wisdom to the Next Generation
Speaking directly about the younger players in the Pakistan squad, Babar underlined how experience can help guide them in such high-tension encounters. He acknowledged that excitement and anticipation are natural, but urged them to treat this energy positively.
“From our experience, we talk to the youngsters as well and tell them that yes, there is excitement, but the more you stay easy and tension-free, the better it will be for you,” he said in a video clip shared on social media. This reflects his belief that managing emotions can be just as important as technical ability in pressure-laden matches.
Babar’s advice comes in the backdrop of a strong history between the two teams in the T20 World Cups. India has traditionally had the upper hand, winning seven of their eight previous encounters in the tournament. Pakistan’s lone victory in this rivalry came in 2021, when Babar himself played a key role with a memorable batting performance, anchoring a massive opening partnership.
Intensity and Expectations
Babar also reflected on the unique intensity surrounding an India–Pakistan match. Unlike regular international fixtures, these contests attract extraordinary global attention. He noted that “an India–Pakistan match is always high-intensity. The whole world is involved, all the fans, both countries, and … it feels like the entire world is watching.”
According to him, this spotlight not only raises expectations but also requires players to maintain composure beyond the usual competitive stresses.
