Team India’s star bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, recently revealed why he chose 93 as his jersey number in international cricket. The 31-year-old explained that he initially wanted the number 12 but gave it up to Yuvraj Singh out of respect for his seniority.
Speaking to Fox Sports on December 5, ahead of the Adelaide Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Bumrah mentioned that he opted for 93, his birth year, as his jersey number. He commented:
“93 was the year I was born, so it’s just that. When I came into the side, I wanted the number 12. But at that time, Yuvraj Singh had that number. So, for his seniority, I gave him that number and I chose this.”

Jasprit Bumrah wore jersey number 12 during his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2013, where he made an impressive start by dismissing Virat Kohli, Mayank Agarwal, and Karun Nair.
Bumrah was named Player of the Match in the opening Test of the BGT 2024-25 series
In the first Test of the BGT 2024-25 against Australia in Perth, Bumrah captained Team India in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who was on paternity leave. The visitors secured a dominant 295-run win in the match, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Bumrah was the standout performer with the ball, taking eight wickets across both innings. It was also Bumrah’s first Test victory as India’s captain. Reflecting on the memorable win, he shared his thoughts during a conversation with Fox Sports:
“I did have a lot of fun last game. My first Test win as a captain. So, it was very special for me.”
Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match in the Perth Test. With a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final on the line, India will be hoping their pace leader maintains his excellent form throughout the series.
