Shakib AL Hasan appointed as captain for Bangladesh Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup

Bangladesh captain Shakib AL Hasan wins the seat in parliament seat with a landslide victory in the country’s general elections on Sunday. He was contesting from the constituency of the western town of Mogra, he won by getting 185,388 votes reported by Dhaka Tribune.

Shaikh Hasina won the Gopalganj 3 constituency in a landslide victory which is her 8th term as member of parliament. Hasina’s Awami League won a total of 223 seats to form the government in the election conducted on Sunday.

“You do not need to give a speech. You can hit a six, and you can take wickets with the ball. Just hit a six again in the election,” the Prime Minister said to the ace allrounder, calling him a gem.

Shakib AL Hasan was one of the best all-rounders across all formats but has taken a brief break from the sports while contesting elections but not been confirmed that his time to play the country has come up.

“Did I retire?” Shakib asked rhetorically to an AFP query during his campaigning. “If I haven’t retired, then where does this question come from?”

Shakib AL Hasan’s poor performance in the 2023 World Cup

Shakib AL Hasan was appointed as the captain of the Bangladesh team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh struggled badly winning against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

They were outplayed by India, New Zealand, South Africa, England, Netherlands, Pakistan and Australia. It was a disappointing outing for the Bangladesh side. Shakib AL Hasan had a disappointing outing with the bat not able to score runs regularly and did not pick wickets.

Despite their performances, Bangladesh progressed through the 2025 Champions Trophy to be played in Pakistan. Mahmudullah finished as the leading run-getter in WC 2023 with 328 runs from 8 matches (7 innings) including 1 century and 1 half-century including the best score of 111 against South Africa.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shoriful Islam grabbed 10 wickets each in the tournament. Both players contributed but could not help Bangladesh register victories consistently.
