The Bangladesh Cricket Board is preparing to formally approach the International Cricket Council to request a reconsideration of match venues for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which is scheduled to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
This move follows growing unease within the Bangladesh camp regarding player safety and logistical concerns after recent developments involving one of their key players. Bangladesh are slated to play multiple World Cup fixtures in Indian cities, but officials believe the current situation warrants a serious review of those arrangements.
Mustafizur Rahman Episode Triggers Tension
The issue escalated after the Board of Control for Cricket in India reportedly asked Kolkata Knight Riders to drop Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL squad. The decision was linked to concerns arising from the broader political and security environment following unrest in Bangladesh.
KKR subsequently confirmed Mustafizur’s release and stated that the franchise would be permitted to sign a replacement under IPL regulations. The move, however, did not sit well with Bangladesh cricket officials, who viewed it as a signal that their players might face complications or restrictions while operating in India.
ICC to Take Final Call on Venue Changes
According to Bangladesh officials, the matter will soon be formally placed before the ICC, which holds the final authority over World Cup scheduling and venues. While Bangladesh has not indicated any intention to withdraw from the tournament, it is seeking assurances that its players will be able to participate in a safe and pressure-free environment.
The proposed solution could involve relocating Bangladesh’s matches to neutral venues or adjusting hosting responsibilities between the co-hosts. Officials from the BCB have stressed that their priority is player welfare and maintaining focus on cricket rather than off-field distractions.
The ICC is expected to review the request carefully, keeping in mind tournament integrity, diplomatic sensitivities, and the practical challenges of altering venues at this stage of planning.
