BCCI And Cricket Australia Extend Border-Gavaskar Trophy To Five Tests

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia will now officially be the five-test match series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia decided to extend the series to five matches. India will tour Australia for the series later this year.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has a rich history and is named after legendary cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border. The series will witness five matches for the first time since 1991-92. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the development and said it is a step towards preserving Test cricket. He said as quoted by News18,

“The BCCI remains steadfast in its dedication to preserving the rich heritage of Test Cricket, a format we hold in the highest esteem. Our ongoing collaboration with Cricket Australia in extending the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to five Tests underscores our collective commitment to nurturing and elevating Test cricket’s significance.”

Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 schedule to be announced soon

Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird also echoed Jay Shah’s thoughts. He expressed that the extension reflected the vision of the BCCI and Cricket Australia. The boards will release the schedule for the five-match Test series soon. Talking about the recent development, Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird said as quoted by News18,

“This extension echoes our shared vision to amplify the essence of Test cricket and uphold its legacy. As India and Australia, come together, we anticipate an enthralling spectacle that will captivate fans worldwide with its intensity and excitement.”

“We are absolutely delighted the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been extended to five Tests given the intense rivalry between our two great cricketing nations and the excitement this creates,” he added.

India hosted the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy and won the four-match series 2-1. They have the most wins in the rivalry and are on a winning streak of four BGT series.
