BCCI Awards

At the prestigious BCCI Awards ceremony held in Hyderabad on Tuesday, the cricketing fraternity witnessed a momentous occasion as former India head coach Ravi Shastri and the prolific batter Shubman Gill were bestowed with well-deserved honours. Ravi Shastri, a luminary in Indian cricket, added another feather to his illustrious cap by receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 edition of the BCCI awards.

Shastri, a key figure in India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, expressed his gratitude, reflecting on his four-decade-long journey in the game and acknowledging the BCCI’s pivotal role throughout. Joining Shastri in the elite list of awardees was former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer, who also received the Lifetime Achievement Award, marking a fitting recognition of his contributions to the sport.

The awards ceremony, a significant event after a hiatus since 2019, celebrated outstanding performances across various categories, highlighting the prowess of Indian cricketers. Shubman Gill, the emerging star of Indian cricket, earned the title of the Best International Cricketer in the men’s category. Gill’s stellar season propelled him to the pinnacle of the ICC batting rankings in the 50-over format, making him the fourth Indian batter to achieve this feat after legends Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.

Gill’s ascent saw him replace Pakistan’s Babar Azam as the top-ranked batter and also set the record as the fastest to surpass the 2000-run mark in ODIs. The ceremony witnessed other noteworthy accolades, including the Polly Umrigar Award for Best Men’s Cricketer of the Year, which went to Shubman Gill for the year 2022-23. The dynamic Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah received a special honor for his exceptional performances in the 2021-2022 season and was named Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the upcoming Test series against England.

Additionally, the Polly Umrigar Award was presented to Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami for their outstanding performances in the 2020-21 and 2019-2020 seasons, respectively. The comprehensive list of awards covered various categories, recognizing excellence in women’s cricket, international debuts, domestic tournaments, umpiring, and individual performances in age-group cricket.

The BCCI Awards in 2024 not only celebrated the achievements of cricketing stalwarts but also showcased the depth and talent across different facets of the game, providing a fitting tribute to the outstanding contributions to Indian cricket.
