The Indian squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies has been announced, leading to discussions over the absence of several names. Players like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shardul Thakur, and Karun Nair, who were seen on the England tour between June and August, do not feature in the new team. Sarfaraz Khan, who recently attracted attention for his remarkable weight loss, was also not included.
Despite playing for India A in England, he did not make the cut for the senior squad. His last appearance for India came against New Zealand in October 2024. When asked about the decision, BCCI’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified, “He is injured.”
Squad Changes For The Windies Series
The upcoming Test series begins on October 2, and the selectors introduced both fresh faces and experienced players. Devdutt Padikkal returns to the Test setup, while Ravindra Jadeja has been handed the responsibility of vice-captaincy. Padikkal’s most recent outing in Test cricket was during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in November 2024, where he scored 0 and 25 across two innings.
However, his strong performance earlier this month in the first unofficial Test against Australia A, where he scored a century in Lucknow, boosted his case for selection. Shubman Gill will continue leading the red-ball squad after taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, who has retired from the format. His leadership will now be supported by Jadeja, combining youth with experience in the team’s core setup.
Wicketkeeping Responsibilities And Injury Concerns
The wicketkeeping role for the West Indies series has been assigned to Dhruv Jurel, who had stepped in for Rishabh Pant during the final Test against England in August. N Jagadeesan has been included as a backup keeper to strengthen the options. Pant, who served as vice-captain during the five-match England series, unfortunately suffered a severe foot injury during the fourth Test, ruling him out of the decisive final game. His absence continues to impact the team as he remains sidelined.
The selectors’ choices for this series highlight the balance they aim to achieve between grooming young players and maintaining experienced leadership. While questions surrounded Sarfaraz Khan’s non-selection, the confirmation from Agarkar points to injury as the reason rather than form. With Gill at the helm, Jadeja as deputy, and new opportunities for players like Padikkal and Jurel, the squad enters the series with a mix of promise and responsibility, hoping to set the tone for future red-ball assignments.
