Rishabh Pant, India’s vice-captain and wicketkeeper, suffered a blow to his left index finger during the second session on Day 1 of the third Test match between India and England. The incident took place in the 34th over when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a ball down the leg side.
Pant dived to his left in an attempt to stop the ball and managed to get a hand on it. However, he couldn’t fully stop it, and the England batters, Joe Root and Ollie Pope, took advantage to run two. After the dive, Pant was seen grimacing in pain and clearly discomforted by the impact on his finger.
BCCI Confirms Injury and Update
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) soon issued a statement about the injury. “Team India vice-captain Rishabh Pant got hit on his left index finger. He is receiving treatment at the moment and under the supervision of the medical team. Dhruv Jurel is currently keeping wickets in Rishabh’s absence,” the BCCI said.
According to the update, Pant is being closely monitored by the medical staff and is not actively involved on the field for the time being. This sudden change prompted India to bring in Dhruv Jurel to take over wicketkeeping duties, even though he was not part of the playing XI for the match.
Jurel Steps In As Replacement
Once Rishabh Pant left the field after the end of Bumrah’s over, Dhruv Jurel stepped up to keep wickets. Prior to this, the game was briefly paused as medical staff came onto the field to attend to Pant. Despite receiving treatment, Pant did not appear fully comfortable. He was seen shrugging his hands during play, indicating persistent discomfort.
Eventually, the decision was made for him to step off the field. The injury came at a critical moment in the match, and his departure left a gap, especially given his dual role as both a leader and wicketkeeper. While the extent of the injury is yet to be fully assessed, the team and fans are hoping for a quick recovery as India continues its battle in this crucial Test match against England.
