Jasprit Bumrah is anticipated to be the BCCI nomination for the Arjuna award. The premier fast bowler of India missed out last year because of seniority to Ravindra Jadeja. The prestigious Arjuna award recognizes the outstanding achievements of athletes in sports.

The BCCI is expected to name the nominations for the men’s and women’s categories later this month. Bumrah, who made his debut for India in 2016, has become the leader of the pace attack of India in all formats. The 26-year-old has won several matches for India with his brilliant bowling display.

Last year, BCCI sent out three names for the men’s category for nominations which were Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Jadeja. Bumrah narrowly missed out due to the fact he had completed only two years in international cricket. The criteria of selection for the Arjuna award requires the athlete to play at least three years at the highest level.

A source told, “That’s why Bumrah, who completed three years in International Cricket last year. He missed out to Jadeja who is senior as well and a consistent performer of India for many years.”

“He certainly has the best credentials. Bumrah was ICC’s number 1 bowler in ODI. He is the only Asian bowler to pick a 5 wicket haul in Australia, England, South Africa and West Indies”, the source added.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami, who had a police case filed against him by his estranged wife alleging domestic violence and adultery against him. Due to this, it is highly unlikely that BCCI would send the name of Shami in the nominations this year.

In this scenario, Shikhar Dhawan’s name can be added, who has been a senior player of the Indian team. The opening batsman was out of action for the most part last year after sustaining injuries. But, a former BCCI office-bearer said that they cannot ignore Dhawan’s seniority.

“In 2018, BCCI had sent the name of Shikhar Dhawan for nomination by only Smriti Mandhana got the award. So this time BCCI can send both Bumrah and Dhawan’s names,” he said.
