BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Visits NFL Headquarters In New York

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), visited the National Football League (NFL) headquarters in New York. Representing the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shah is in the United States to watch Team India’s matches in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The NFL, a prestigious league founded over a century ago, consists of 32 teams and is renowned for the Super Bowl, a globally watched event. In contrast, the IPL, established just 16 years ago, has seen significant growth in both revenue and popularity. It has firmly captured the Indian market and may soon expand its reach further.

During his visit, Shah presented NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell with a customized NFL helmet featuring the BCCI logo and a Team India jersey. In return, he received an NFL football. Shah also had discussions with Goodell’s team at the NFL headquarters.

“BCCI Honorary Secretary, Mr. @JayShah, visited the @NFL headquarters in New York to meet with Commissioner Mr. Roger Goodell and his distinguished team. This introductory meeting focused on sharing best practices, exchanging ideas, and elevating fan engagement and experiences,” BCCI captioned the video

Global Giants: Comparing NFL and IPL’s Revenue and Popularity

The 2024 NFL season kicks off on September 5, with playoffs starting on January 11, 2025. The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the last Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. Both the NFL and IPL rank high globally in revenue and viewership.

The NFL excels in revenue and sponsorship during its five-month season. The IPL, despite its two-month window, competes closely. The league recently expanded from eight to ten teams and is still in the early stages of its growth.

The IPL faces challenges in increasing its presence due to international cricket’s significance. Similar to cricket, the NFL boasts top athletes, including legends like Tom Brady and Reggie White. Current stars include Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
