Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India’s squad for the ongoing fifth and final Test against England at The Oval. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the decision, citing workload management as the reason.

Mr Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India’s squad for the fifth Test of the series against England. The fifth and final Test of the series is underway at Kennington Oval, London,” said the BCCI in a statement on Friday.

Jasprit Bumrah, who did not appear in the team bus on Day 2, was not named in the playing XI. His absence follows prior discussions by the selectors and coaching staff, who had stated he would not play more than three Tests in the series.

Management Strategy Behind Bumrah’s Rest

Before the start of the series, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had both stated that Bumrah’s participation would be limited. He played in the first Test at Headingley, the third at Lord’s, and the fourth at Old Trafford. Across these three matches, he delivered 119.4 overs and claimed 14 wickets, making him the highest wicket-taker for India in the series.

The coaching team closely monitored his physical workload, and the decision to rest him for the final Test was made accordingly. “We obviously want to wheel him out, but we also want to respect where his body is at, and on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn’t worth including him in the squad. He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn’t always seem like that because he’s only played three tests and he’s only bowled in one innings in Manchester.”

India’s Focus On Long-Term Planning

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate emphasized the importance of keeping Bumrah fit and managing his bowling workload sensibly.

But if you look at the loads, he’s bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right on that call,” he added.

With the aim to preserve Bumrah’s fitness for upcoming fixtures, the team chose to rotate the bowling attack. India’s updated squad for the fifth Test now includes several pace and spin options such as Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav. Shubman Gill leads the side, with KL Rahul as his deputy.
