The Ranji Trophy final between Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka was overshadowed by an unexpected moment of poor sportsmanship on the second day of play. Jammu and Kashmir captain Paras Dogra was seen on camera appearing to head-butt Karnataka’s substitute fielder, KV Aneesh, after the J&K skipper had struck the ball to the boundary in play at the Hubballi Cricket Ground.
After edging a delivery from pacer Prasidh Krishna for four, Dogra and Aneesh engaged in a heated verbal exchange. The situation escalated quickly, with Dogra “butting on Aneesh’s helmet” in what footage suggested was a deliberate physical contact.
The heat of the moment was further illustrated by the immediate intervention of other players. Former India batter Mayank Agarwal stepped in between Dogra and Aneesh to calm the situation, while on-field umpires also moved to defuse the tension. The altercation briefly drew the attention of both teams and required officials to restore order on the field.
BCCI’s Disciplinary Response
Following the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took decisive disciplinary action against Dogra. As per the playing regulations for men’s multi-day domestic cricket, physical contact with an opponent is grounds for sanction.
Dogra was fined 50 % of his match fees for the head-butting incident — a significant financial penalty that reflects the seriousness with which such conduct is viewed. In addition, he was also handed two demerit points which will be added to his disciplinary record, potentially affecting future selection considerations or conduct assessments.
Despite these consequences, the exact announcement of sanctions came through a match referee and was expected once Day 2 play concluded, underscoring how procedures in professional cricket handle contentious on-field behaviour.
Aftermath and Match Context
While Dogra played a significant innings — scoring 70 — his head-butt moment overshadowed what had been a strong performance by Jammu and Kashmir. The team ended the day at 527 for 6, with contributions from other batters like Kanhaiya Wadhawan and Sahil Lotra helping build a commanding position.
Dogra’s involvement in the clash has sparked conversations about discipline in domestic cricket’s marquee fixtures, especially in high-pressure games like a Ranji final. For many observers, the incident raised questions about maintaining professionalism even under intense competitive stress.
