The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold its 93rd Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) on September 29. However, unlike previous AGMs, there is a notable absence on the agenda this year the election of the new BCCI secretary. With many critical issues at stake, this AGM promises to be a pivotal moment in shaping Indian cricket’s administrative future.

Overview of the BCCI’s AGM

AGM is an annual event where key decisions regarding the functioning of Indian cricket are made. This year’s meeting will focus on important appointments, budgets, policy changes, and a few landmark events that coincide with it. The AGM will take place in Bengaluru, a city known for its strong cricketing culture and infrastructure.

One of the major events set to coincide with the AGM is the inauguration of the brand-new National Cricket Academy (NCA). This state-of-the-art facility is expected to be a major boost to Indian cricket’s future, providing world-class training and rehabilitation facilities for upcoming players.

Why no election for New BCCI Secretary

Surprisingly, one of the most anticipated events the election of the new BCCI secretary will not take place at this AGM. The current secretary, Jay Shah, has been elected unanimously as the new ICC Chairman, creating a need for a new secretary at the BCCI. However, he will continue in his current role as the BCCI secretary until December 1, which is why no election for his replacement is scheduled at the AGM.

Despite his upcoming appointment as ICC Chairman, Jay Shah will retain his role as BCCI secretary until the end of November. He will oversee critical matters like the 2024-25 budget ratification and other pressing issues during this transition period.

With Jay Shah taking on the ICC Chairmanship, the BCCI will need to appoint a new representative to attend ICC meetings. One of the leading candidates for this role is Roger Binny, the current BCCI president.

Other Key Matters on the Agenda

  1. One of the regular activities during the AGM will be the induction of two new representatives from the BCCI’s general body into the IPL Governing Council.
  2. The AGM will also see the inclusion of one representative from the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) into the IPL Governing Council.
  3. The AGM will include the ratification of the BCCI’s annual budget for the 2024-25 financial year. The budget encompasses funding for domestic tournaments, player contracts, and infrastructure development.
  4. Another critical agenda item is the appointment of an Ombudsman and Ethics Officer, both crucial roles in maintaining transparency and ethical standards within the BCCI.
  5. The AGM will also appoint members to the Cricket Committee and the Standing Committee, which play crucial roles in policy formation and tournament oversight.
  6. A new Umpires Committee will also be formed under Rule 27, tasked with improving umpiring standards and ensuring the professional development of match officials in India.
  7. The Internal Committee on Prevention of Sexual Harassment will present its findings at the AGM. This is a key agenda item, reflecting the BCCI’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive work environment for all its members.
