BCCI To Review Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma’s Roles After IND vs SA 2025 ODIs: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to convene a meeting to determine the ODI futures of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The session is expected to take place in Ahmedabad after India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa.

As per a Times of India report, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are set to meet with top BCCI officials to discuss strategies regarding Kohli and Sharma ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both former captains currently play only in ODIs, having retired from T20Is and Tests.

BCCI Prioritizes Clarity On Roles For Rohit And Kohli, Prepares Backup Options

The report also indicated that the team management is actively working on identifying potential backups for Kohli and Sharma to ensure readiness if either player is unavailable for the ICC tournament. A BCCI insider stressed that both players had the right to understand their roles and the expectations of the team management. TOI quoted the source as saying:

“It is very important that players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature are given clarity about what is expected of them and how the current management views their roles. They can’t just be playing with uncertainty.”

The report also stated that the BCCI plans to convey the selectors and team management’s concerns to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. A source further noted the difficulties faced by senior players who participate in only one format.

“They did score runs in the third ODI in Australia. But the series was already lost and the match was set up by the bowlers in the first innings. They looked rusty in the first two matches. One can’t afford that in every series,” the source told the Times of India.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to feature in the home ODI series against South Africa, with the opening match scheduled in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30.
