Ex-PCB Chief Hits Out Over Champions Trophy Dispute

India’s dominance in cricket is unparalleled, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) holds considerable sway in international decision-making. With cricket being a revenue-driven sport, BCCI’s financial strength gives it an upper hand in shaping policies within the International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, ICC often aligns its decisions with BCCI’s interests, further solidifying India’s influence on the global stage.

Controversy Over the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy

A recent controversy has highlighted BCCI’s power in international cricket. The Indian board refused to send its team to a particular host nation for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, prompting the ICC to designate Dubai as a co-host. Consequently, the Indian team will play all its matches there, a move perceived by many as an unfair advantage.

This decision has frustrated cricket officials, as it impacts the financial prospects of the tournament. Some of the most commercially valuable matches, which would have generated significant revenue, will now take place in an alternate location.

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani voiced his frustration, attributing the issue to BCCI rather than ICC. He claimed that an existing agreement was not honored by the Indian board, leading to complications in organizing the tournament. Having served as ICC President from 2003 to 2006, Mani is well-versed in cricket governance and hopes that current ICC Chairman Jay Shah will intervene to foster better coordination between BCCI and PCB.

India-Pakistan Matches Moved to Neutral Venues

The ICC has also announced a major shift in its scheduling approach for India-Pakistan encounters. Between 2024 and 2027, all ICC tournament matches involving the two teams will be played at neutral venues. This decision affects the 2026 T20 World Cup, where Pakistan will now play its matches in Sri Lanka instead of India. While this move is meant to ease tensions, it further underscores the complexities of cricketing politics and the significant role BCCI plays in shaping international events.
