The Bangladesh Cricket Team registered their first Test win over New Zealand in Bangladesh with a dominating win on the 5th day played at Sylhet International Ground, Sylhet on 2nd December 2023.

It was an impressive performance by the Bangladesh side as they posted a decent total in the first innings. Bangladesh batters showed aggressive intent to put pressure on New Zealand bowlers and set New Zealand’s 332-run target.

The Bangladesh spinners created enough impact and bowled out New Zealand for 181 runs on the fifth morning and registered 12 points in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle.

  1. Taijul Islam

The left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was the pick of bowlers for Bangladesh with 10 wickets in the match. He got the initial breakthrough in the first innings dismissing Tom Latham. Taijul was bought into attack breaking the partnership between Kane Williamson and Darly Mitchell.

Right before the end of day 2, Taijul got rid of centurion Kane Williamson and dismissed Ish Sodhi. It was a superb bowling effort as the spinner finished with figures of 4 for 109 in 39 overs.

He was lethal in the second innings with some lovely bowling. Taijul Islam got rid of Devon Conway and centurion Kane Williamson early to break the backbone of New Zealand’s batting lineup. It was a stunning effort by Taijul and did not allow the Kiwi batters to score runs easily. He then took the wicket of Tom Blundell. Right before the stroke of the close of play, Taijul dismissed Kyle Jamieson to leave Bangladesh on course for a famous win.

Taijul Islam then got the remaining two wickets of Tim Southee and finished with the wicket of Ish Sodhi to finish with figures of 6 for 75 in 31.1 overs. For his match-winning efforts, Taijul Islam was the named player of the match award.

  1. Najmul Hasan Shanto

Najmul Hasan Shanto led from the front with the bat in both innings. He looked in great touch putting pressure on New Zealand bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking and making life tough for opponent bowlers.

He scored quickfire 37 off 35 deliveries including 2 fours and 3 sixes. Right before the stroke of lunch break, Shanto played a rash stroke providing a simple catch to Kane Williamson.

Shanto showed his class with a well-made century in the second innings. He came to the crease with the scoreboard reading 23 for 1. It was a good inning by Shanto not allowing NZ spinners to take singles and hit boundaries.

His batting looks impressive reaching fifty off 95 balls and keeping the scoreboard ticking. He along with Mominal Haque did not allow the NZ bowlers to settle. Shanto looked calm reaching a century off 192 deliveries. Bangladesh ended 3rd day on 212 for 3.

Shanto was dismissed adding just 1 run to his overnight score for 105. His innings laid a strong foundation to help Bangladesh post a decent total in 2nd innings.

  1. Mehidy Hasan Miraz

Mehidy Hasan Miraz had a decent outing with both bat and ball. He scored an important 20 runs in the first innings that helped Bangladesh go past 300. With the ball, Mehidy took the big wicket of Devon Conway in the first innings that put New Zealand on the back foot.

Miraz played an important knock in the 2nd innings. With wickets falling from the other end, he survived a few anxious moments and remained not out on 50. His knock helped Bangladesh post 338 in the second innings.

Miraz bowled with great control in the second innings dismissing Henry Nicholls. He ended with figures of 1 for 44 in 15 overs and stopped the flow of runs along with Islam.
